Quality control

Catch defects at the operation

Inspection plans sit on the operation, not at the end of the line. QC records measured values, pass or fail, a photo and a disposition on the device, with the operator and the batch attached. A failed check holds the batch until it is dispositioned. Quality history follows the unit.

Inspection on the operation

Measured values, with the batch and the operator on them

Each operation can carry an inspection plan: characteristics, nominal and tolerance, sample size, and whether a fail holds the batch. QC opens the batch at that operation, enters the values, attaches a photo and chooses the disposition.

  • Plans on the operationDimensional checks at machining, visual at plating, torque at assembly, function at test. Each in its own words, on its own operation.
  • Hold until dispositionedA failed check holds the batch. It moves only when QC records rework, use as is, or reject, with a name on it.
  • Rework with a work orderSend to rework creates a rework operation on the same work order, with the failure reason on it. The re-inspection is recorded against the same batch.
  • Incoming and final tooIncoming inspection on receipts and final inspection before dispatch use the same plans, so the history is one record from supplier lot to shipment.

What management sees

Rejections by operation, shift and cause

First-pass yield for the day. Rejections by operation, so the problem stage is named. Defects by cause, operator and batch, so the corrective action has something to act on. All from what QC and operators recorded, not from a month-end summary.

Questions about quality control

Can inspection plans differ by product?

Yes. A plan is attached to an operation on a routing, and routings are per product or product family. The same operation can carry different characteristics for different parts.

What does an auditor see?

The batch, the operation, the characteristic, the measured value, the result, the photo, the disposition and the name of the person who recorded each. Traced back to the material lots and forward to the shipment.

Does a failed check stop the line?

It holds the batch. The line continues on the next batch if you choose. The held batch cannot move to the next operation or to dispatch until it is dispositioned.

Do we get a certificate of analysis or test report?

Final inspection data is exported per lot in a standard format. A custom certificate layout is quoted as a custom report.
